Opportunities for Whites in Rwanda

                                                                                                                                                                       

Dear friends and family,  

    As you know, Bill and I both retired from teaching this last year and are looking for meaningful ways to use our time. Over the course of our 40 year marriage, we have enjoyed working with people of other nationalities. With an increased amount of free time, that led us to seek opportunities to partner with missionaries.  Thirty-five years ago, we went for a year with CBFMS to Indonesia where Bill worked with Bethesda hospital at Serukum to make “things“ work and Marilyn worked with the MK boarding school. 1st Baptist, Corvallis, Oregon sent us that time.  God used that experience to strengthen our faith further and to keep our heart open towards people of other nations and mission work.  The name of the mission has changed to World Venture, but the ministry is the same, creating powerful partnerships with national peoples that will transform lives and equip leaders for God‘s glory.

     We have missionaries from our church, Wasilla Bible in Wasilla, Alaska, who work with WorldVenture now.  Tim Brubaker and his team have responsibility for training pastors and developing church leaders.  As part of this, New Creation ministry has developed a  4 year tertiary degree program taught in English because of the desire from the Rwandan government for English language fluency.  Tim took over 13,000 books with him a few years ago with the intent of making a University level theological library.   No one up to his time has had the time to catalogue the books and make them easy access in a library format.  Beginning in February, a new program developing English as a second language is in he works.

                                    
    At this time we have been appointed to go to Kigali, Rwanda to work with them for 3 months. We anticipate helping with the library setup and teaching English.  We will work with a newly hired full-time Rwandan librarian to catalogue and organize books on shelves, get study rooms ready and get into place some good library practices that will help the librarian and the library move into the future.   At the same time, we will help as directed in the English instruction.   We expect to leave this spring, in March or April if we have the necessary money raised.

    As a missionary with WorldVenture, we are required to raise money for all of our living expenses while in Rwanda. We need around $7500 to cover one time out-going expenses like airfare, training and other expenses incurred just by moving overseas. Living expenses while there are $2,175 monthly, which includes all of our anticipated expenses during that time.  In order to purchase our airline tickets, we have to have $7,500 committed. WorldVenture asks that we raise 100% of our funds in special gifts or monthly commitments.

They ask that you do not write this information on the memo line.  This gift is tax deductible and you may expect to receive a receipt from them with options to give again.

    Having just finished a masters degree in literacy a few years ago, and having worked my way through college as a reference librarian, I am excited about this opportunity.  Bill is, of course, a master at making things work with little or nothing and his flexibility with teaching and carving makes him an asset in any field.  We hope that you will commit to pray for us whether you can give or not.  We will commit to pray for you as well. Having friends already there, makes going even more of an adventure.
